The Moroccan city of Agadir hosted last November 24 the Seminar on Digital Tourism, organized by the École Nationale de Commerce et de Gestion (ENCG) in collaboration with the Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of Souss Massa.
The meeting was hosted by the Le Tikida Beach Hotel, property of Majorcan chain RIU, and moderated by research professor Rachid Oumlil. The aim of the event was to make known the possibilities of Digital Tourism as a strategy for positioning the tourism sector, thanks to the Internet and the mass media that rely on the network.
As a full professor at the University of Balearic Islands (UIB) and Vice-President of Turistec for EUREKATOURISM+, Carlos Juiz had the opportunity to present the islands as an example of a mature destination and the digital challenges it faces in order to remain competitive and leader. Among them, Juiz focused on Big Data and the digital transformation, tool and process that will meet the increasing demand for product customization that distinguishes tourists and travellers of the 21st century.
The expert in information systems and information technology, is also Vice President of the International Cluster of Information and Communication Technologies applied to Tourism (Turistec) for the Eureka Umbrella dedicated to the tourism industry, EUREKATOURISM+. For this reason, Juiz was able to explain in Agadir how the cluster and the Umbrella work to bring technological innovation to the tourism sector in a transversal way, applying the principle of coopetition (cooperation and competition), above all to overcome the reluctance to the principle of Open Innovation which, in the words of Dr. Juiz "remains one of the great issues to be solved by companies, research centres and different organizations, in many cases reluctant to cooperate with external professionals."
In the seminar, the collaboration between Turistec and the UIB was highlighted by the central government-funded platform InnovaTTion Spain: the first 'ICT-Tourism marketplace'. This marketplace, Juiz recalled, will allow the ideas "to be offered and requested in an open, reliable and neutral site, since the generation of these ideas and their selection is located in a place outside organizations and companies."
Among those attending the colloquium were professionals and associations linked to the tourism sector, as well as students of the Master's degree in Tourism from the ENCG, responsible for the Agadir Regional Tourism Center and agents operating in the Souss region such as the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, GIZ.
