In the 34th edition of the Annual UK Performance Engineering Workshop (UKPEW) at the University of Newcastle from 17th to 18th December, Belén Bermejo presented the work entitled "On the virtualization overhead and energy consumption in consolidated servers".

This paper studies the energy consumption when virtualizing consolidated servers. Due to the increase in the use of cloud computing services, the virtualization technology has gained a huge importance in data centres. However, virtualization causes performance degradation due to the extra management workload. As a consequence, the energy consumption of data centre increases too. The current trend in data centres management is to consolidate virtual machines to mitigate these effects. In this paper, we study the sources of virtualization overhead in consolidated servers. In addition, we propose a joint formal definition for the performance degradation and the energy consumption when consolidated servers. In order to determine the virtualization overhead, we perform real experiments through benchmarking and monitoring techniques. The obtained results show that the amount of virtualization performance degradation although the energy consumption of physical servers depends on the number of consolidated virtual machines. We also provide a simple but useful index to point out these two effects on consolidated servers.
